Knowing the Difference Between ASTM and KN95 Masks

As the temperature continues to drop, and flu season is still active, it makes sense that more people are wearing masks to keep themselves safe. However, if you haven't masked in some time, then knowing which is the right mask for you can feel a little difficult. For everyday people, a KN95 or N95 mask is the perfect choice for keeping you safe, not just this winter, but all year round.

What Do ASTM Level 3 Masks Do?

Let’s start with a quick reminder on what the ASTM Level 3 mask does. These masks are primarily used for medical purposes; you’ll often see dentists wearing one and are made to be a loose fit. An ASTM Level 3 mask’s main purpose is to prevent airborne particulates produced by the wearer from escaping but notably isn’t designed to stop incoming particulates from those around you. These may raise the question as to why they were so commonly worn during Covid, but when everyone wore a mask, the downsides of an ASTM weren’t prevalent, and so these were perfect for keeping you safe. But today, when wearing masks is far less common, an ASTM Level 3, may help to keep those around you safe if you're feeling unwell, but for out and about use, a KN95 or N95 mask may prove a better choice.

If you’re looking for an alternative mask, then the 3M N95 Aura mask is what you want. These masks use proprietary filters, making breathing comfortable, and with a soft nose foam and smooth inner materials, the mask proves a snug fit. If you wear glasses, then this mask is fantastic, with a sculptured top panel that conforms to the nose and eye contours of the face giving plenty of room for eyewear. The 3M N95 Aura mask maintains a greater seal, with a unique head strap making this a good alternative option.
