Allergies, Cold, Flu or COVID? How to Tell the Difference This Fall
Runny nose and sneezing? It could be fall allergies, a cold, the flu or COVID. Compare symptoms at a glance and find out when a rapid test can help you know for sure.

Nothing brings the family together quite like Thanksgiving: catching up with relatives and enjoying each other's company around the table. For many families, that table includes grandparents, young children, or relatives with medical vulnerabilities. Why It Pays to Plan Ahead This Year Respiratory season has arrived early this fall, with flu off to an early start in P.E.I., Alberta and B.C. (CTV News, Sept 30, 2026). Older Canadians are feeling it most. In the week ending September 26, 63% of reported COVID-19 cases and 55% of flu cases were in people aged 65 and older (CP24, Oct 2, 2026). Numbers like these change from week to week, but they tend to climb through the fall, so a little preparation now can save you a headache later. Getting There Safely If you're travelling for Thanksgiving, think about how and when you'll get there. Buses, trains and planes will be busy over the long weekend, from the station or airport to the seats themselves. Even if you're staying home, the grocery store the day before Thanksgiving can feel just as crowded. A well-fitting CA-N95 mask, made right here in Canada, adds a layer of protection in those busy spaces. It's breathable and comfortable enough to wear for long stretches, which makes it an easy travel companion, however you're getting there. If you're flying, it's also worth reading why you should keep a rapid test with you when you travel. A Quick Test Before You Arrive Whether you're heading out on the day or hosting and waiting for the doorbell, a quick test before everyone gathers can give you some extra peace of mind. The WELLlife 3-in-1 COVID-19 / Flu A&B Test Kit checks for COVID-19, Flu A and Flu B with a single swab, with results in 10 minutes. Testing the morning of the gathering, rather than a few days before, gives you the most up-to-date picture. Just follow the kit instructions closely, including when to read your result. If anyone wakes up feeling unwell, the kindest choice is to sit this one out and join by video call. It's never easy to miss a family dinner, but your relatives will appreciate the thought, and if you want to do something for your relative you can't make it and they're located in the GTA, a quick order for one of our test kits on Uber Eats can get them essential PPE without them having to leave the home. Hosting With Care If you're the one opening your doors, a few small touches can help everyone feel comfortable, especially guests who are more cautious this time of year. Consider leaving a box of individually sealed KN95 masks by the front door, so anyone who'd like one can grab it without having to ask. A few spare test kits on the hallway table work the same way. It's a quiet, no-pressure gesture that says "we thought about you." Want something a little more festive? Our Kind KN95 Colour Series comes in 25 shades, including warm autumn tones that fit right in with the season. Fresh Air and Clean Hands Some of the simplest habits are also the easiest to forget when the kitchen is busy. Cracking a window, or running the range hood while you cook, helps keep air moving through the house as more people arrive. If you have an air purifier, the dining room is a great place for it. Clean hands matter just as much. Setting a bottle of Zytec Gel Hand Sanitizer by the entrance and another near the food makes it easy for everyone, kids included. Giving each shared dish its own serving spoon means fewer hands reach into the same bowl. And if the weather cooperates, a walk after dinner or dessert on the porch is a lovely way to get some fresh air together. A Simple Thanksgiving Checklist Before the big day, take a minute to make sure you have: Home test kits on hand for anyone who wants one A box of masks by the door Hand sanitizer at the entrance and near the food A window or fan ready for good airflow A video-call plan for anyone who isn't feeling well For more on why it helps to keep supplies on hand all season, see our post on the importance of keeping KN95/N95 masks at home. Enjoy the Long Weekend None of this needs to feel clinical. A few thoughtful steps let everyone relax and focus on what Thanksgiving is really about: good food, good company, and time with the people who matter most. Need a few last-minute essentials? If you're in the Greater Toronto Area, orders placed before 1 PM ET can arrive the same day, and we offer fast shipping across Canada. From all of us at PPE Supply Canada, Happy Thanksgiving! Read moreBeat Spring Allergies: Why N95 & KN95 Masks Are Your Best Defense
Now that we can finally put away our winter coats, the warm weather is a great opportunity to get outside and soak up the sun. For some, however, spring introduces a whole new problem. As flowers bloom and pollen levels increase, what follows is itchy eyes, a runny nose, and congestion. It sounds like the common cold, but it’s not. For those with seasonal allergies, springtime spells a months-long battle with hay fever, and with pollen counts climbing, this allergy trigger will only increase as the season goes on. Fortunately, there are plenty of measures you can take to help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. The Drawbacks of Reactive Relief Despite how prominent hay fever can be during this time of year, there are plenty of methods to help alleviate symptoms, but some are less effective than others. For example, while a nasal spray can be an effective short-term solution, over-relying on this form of relief can actually have the opposite effect. Decongestant nasal sprays thin out the blood vessels in your nose. Overusing them can cause those vessels to become dependent, swelling too much in the spray's absence and resulting in even more congestion than you were dealing with initially. Some opt for oral medication to help mitigate the effects of hay fever, but this also has its drawbacks. Because the pill must be digested first before being distributed throughout your entire body, it doesn’t specifically target your nose, where most of your troubles originate. As a result, the relief you feel can actually be quite limited. Taking a Proactive Approach with High-Quality Masks This isn’t to say medications are entirely ineffective; they’re not, and you’re still encouraged to use them. However, a proactive approach can help prevent symptoms from arising to begin with. When the main entry points for irritants are your eyes and nose, it’s best to keep those areas covered. For eyes, a pair of wraparound sunglasses is a great choice. For your nose and mouth, there’s no better option than a high-quality KN95 mask or a Canadian-made CA-N95 mask. What makes these masks so effective? They are made from multiple layers of non-woven, melt-blown fabric designed to filter out a minimum of 95% of airborne particulates, which includes microscopic pollen, significantly reducing the chance of it reaching your airways. Plus, wearing a mask doesn't mean sacrificing your spring style; with popular colors like mauve, sage, and royal blue back in stock, it's easy to match your protection to your springtime wardrobe. With multiple sizes available, we have options that cater to everyone, ensuring a comfortable, well-sealing fit is never too far away. N95/KN95 vs. ASTM Level 3: Why the Seal Matters While an ASTM Level 3 procedure mask might seem like a good option to deal with symptoms, it isn't nearly as effective for allergy prevention as an N95 or KN95. This comes down to the fit. ASTM Level 3 masks fit loosely against the face, allowing pollen-laden air to easily slip in through the gaps on the sides, top, and bottom. An N95 or KN95 mask, however, is designed to create a tight, secure seal against your face. This seal forces all the air you breathe to pass directly through the filtration material, effectively shielding you from airborne particulates, from pollen to germs. That airtight fit is exactly why these masks are the ones you want if keeping pollen away is the goal. Enjoy Spring Symptom-Free With pollen abound, a KN95 or Canadian-made N95 mask is a simple, effective method to help you enjoy the spring without the sniffling, coughing, runny nose, and constant irritation. Grab your mask, step outside, and finally take back the season!
